Every year on the Saturday of Semana Santa (late March/early April), Bayahibe hosts a
regatta
of handmade fishing boats. The race runs from the town cove to Catalina Island
and back.

Bayahibe proper has several good budget hotels all within walking distance of one anoth-
er; locals can point you in the direction of a family willing to take on temporary boarders.
A stay here affords you excellent eating options and the chance to experience the rhythms
of the town away from the masses. The enclave of Dominicus Americanus has several
midrange and top-end options - the advantage here is that it's a short walk to an excellent
beach. There is a string of all-inclusive resorts in Dominicus Americanus and along the
road between there and Bayahibe; only Dreams La Romana is within walking distance of
town.

With its shaded palapa, floral-draped fringes and large rooms, this is
Bayahibe's best bang for the buck. The Italian-owned villas all come with patios and stone
flooring while the air-con rooms have kitchens and living room spaces. Room 5 is a steal
for US$50, featuring top-floor views and a wrap-around terrace. The hotel's residential

equal quieter.

Cabañas Taíno, under new ownership, is a perfectly doable
budget choice located in the center of the action in town. Pop your head in before making
a decision. It has simple rooms with basic furnishings, minibars, small porches, private
bathrooms with hot water (hopeless pressure) and working wi-fi in the rooms - the big ad-
vantage here over similarly-priced options.
Bring earplugs: rooms with fans are extremely loud due to the blasting music coming
from the nearby bar.
