In-Depth Information
(Av Libertad, btwn Calles Márquez & Ducoudrey) Modeled after the George Washington monu-
ment in Washington, DC, the Obelisk is a much smaller version in central La Romana,
painted on all four sides with contemporary and historical depictions of Dominican life.
Isla Catalina
In the 15th century, pirates including Francis Drake would lurk around Isla Catalina wait-
ing to pounce on Spanish ships on their way to and from Santo Domingo. Today, this is-
land ringed by fine coral reefs teeming with fish in shallow water is a popular destination
for groups from nearby Casa de Campo; the resort has frequent shuttles making the 2km
trip, as do large cruise ships.
Most groups spend a couple of hours for snorkeling and lunch, and divers head to a
steep drop-off called The Wall. With enough people or cash it's possible to charter a boat
(most tour companies in the area, from Bayahibe to Romana to Punta Cana and Bávaro,
would probably be open to this for the right price) to an infrequently visited beach on the
far side of the island. In order to camp on the island you must gain permission from the
Parque Nacional del Este office ( Click here ) in Bayahibe - Isla Catalina is officially part
of the park protected area.

RD$1650/1950/2775; ) One of La Romana's few hotels that has both a pleasant enough
location and the right price, this multistory place is perched a block from the Río Dulce
and is a solid choice for independent travelers. Don't expect a lot of smiles or faultless
rooms, but you can have a coffee in the tiny patio area overlooking...the parking lot. Rates
