Buses to Haiti
Capital Coach Line ( 809-530-8266; www.capitalcoachline.com ; Av 27 de Febrero 455) and Caribe
Tours offer daily services in comfortable, air-con buses to Port-au-Prince (US$40, six to
eight hours). Capital Coach Line has one 8am departure daily that stops in Tabarre and
ends in Petion Ville, a neighborhood of Port-au-Prince, and another at 10am that goes
only to Tabarre. Caribe Tours has daily departures at 9am and 11am to Petion Ville; tickets
are sold in a separate office marked Atlantic Travel Agency, at the entrance to the down-
town terminal ( Click here ) . If possible, make a reservation at least two days in advance.
CAR
Numerous international and domestic car-rental companies have more than one office in
Santo Domingo proper and at Las Américas International Airport, including Avis (
809-535-7191; Av George Washington 517) , Dollar ( 809-221-7368; Av Independencia 366) , Europcar
( 809-688-2121; Av Independencia 354) and Hertz ( 809-221-5333; Av José Ma Heredia 1) . All
are open daily roughly from 7am to 6pm in Santo Domingo (sometimes later) and from
7am to 11:30pm at the airport.
SANTO DOMINGO- SAMANÁ HWY
Considering its importance, it's strange that the turnoff to the two-lane, 102km Santo
Domingo-Samaná Hwy (aka Juan Pablo II or DR-7; toll RD$412) is difficult to spot. To find it com-
ing from Santo Domingo, drive east on the coastal road and past the toll booth for the airport; make a
U-turn and continue slowly in the far right lane until you spot the small sign for Samaná.
