In-Depth Information
charm and historic pedigree, the Nicolás de Ovando is as far from a chain hotel as you can
get. Indisputably one of the nicest hotels in the city, it features 97 rooms packed with 21st-
century amenities.
There's a variety of room types, some have four-poster beds, exposed-timber ceilings
and 500-year-old walls with views of the port and river. The split-level contemporary-
style rooms are more basic. Cobblestone walkways run through lushly shaded courtyards
and the fabulous pool has commanding views of the Río Ozama. An excellent buffet
breakfast is included in the rate; La Residence, the hotel's superb and elegant restaurant,
has a separate entrance down the street and opens for lunch and dinner.

al mansion near Plaza España. Rooms with high ceilings, stucco walls and tasteful decor
surround a handsome stone patio. The restaurant here, which serves French fare, is one of
the city's more romantic spots. Some of the rooms are larger and quieter than others, so
ask for layout specifics (guests can access the pool at sister-hotel Nicolás de Ovando on
Las Damas).

Despite chintzy bed linens and little natural light, the sparkling clean rooms with
flatscreen TVs at this modern multistory hotel can be recommended. A miniature snack
bar is attached to the lobby; breakfast here is US$6.
