In-Depth Information
Between 1880 and 1916, nearly 3 million immigrants came to Argentina, principally from
Europe. Many immigrants lived in squalid circumstances as shown in this view of tenant
housing in Buenos Aires around 1910. (Patricia Harris Postcard Collection, Benson Latin
American Collection, University of Texas at Austin)
wages averaged about 25 percent more than those earned by workers
in Paris. Suburban home ownership became a reality for thrifty skilled
workers, as an expert mechanic in Buenos Aires was able to buy a lot
and build a house after saving regularly for a decade.
