In-Depth Information
Illustrating the high regard—or fear—some elements of Argentine society felt for him, a
portrait of General Juan Manuel de Rosas adorned the bedroom wall of this woman of the
elite Buenos Aires class. Rosas, a Creole of the landowning class, was the most successful of
Argentina's 19th-century strongmen, known particularly for bringing stability to economic
and political life and for leading his gaucho warriors against the indigenous tribes of the
Pampas. (Getano Descalzi, 1845, courtesy of Emece Editores)
