Rooms 1-26: Prehistoric Artefacts
The prehistoric collection at the Hermitage contains thousands of artefacts dating
from as far back as the Palaeolithic era (500,000 to 12,000 BC). Most of the items
were excavated from different regions of the USSR during the Soviet era. The follow-
ing are the highlights:
Room 12 Carved petroglyphs (dating to 2000 BC) were taken from the northeastern
shores of Lake Onega after archaeological expeditions in 1935.
Rooms 13-14 Excavations of a burial mound in the northern Caucasus include the
corpse of a nomadic chief, lavishly dressed and covered in jewels.
