HERMITAGE TIPS
Reserve tickets online ( www.hermitagemuseum.org ) and print out the receipt be-
fore you travel to St Petersburg. Your voucher is not tied to any date, so you can go
anytime during your trip. Walk straight into the Hermitage and collect your ticket
without waiting in line - magic. Choose what you take inside the museum carefully -
leave jackets and bags in the cloakroom, though be aware that you can't go back for
anything without leaving the museum. Handbags and plastic bags are allowed in the
Hermitage, but backpacks aren't.
Bring a sandwich or some snacks and a bottle of water with you: you can't leave
the museum for lunch without buying a second ticket to go back in, and both the
eating options in the Hermitage are rather pitiful and overpriced.
Modern European Painting
The 3rd floor of the Winter Palace is hallowed ground for anyone passionate about
early-20th-century art. Huge caches of Matisse and Picasso masterpieces, including
several paintings from Picasso's blue period, crown the collection's modern end,
alongside works by Kandinsky, Malevich, Léger and many other important names
from the era. Matisse's huge primitivist canvases Music and The Dance are other im-
portant highlights, along with his famous Portrait of the Artist's Wife . If the wealth of
the collection itself seems limitless, imagine that there's about 20 times more still in
its vaults.
