In-Depth Information
Each year, millions of art lovers flock to the Hermitage to feast their eyes on the
Western European collection. Occupying more than 120 rooms, the collection does
not miss much: Spanish, Flemish, Dutch, French, English and German art are all
covered from the 15th to the 18th centuries, while the Italian collection goes back all
the way to the 13th century, including the Florentine and Venetian Renaissance, with
priceless works by Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo and Titian. A real high-
light is the enormous collection of Dutch and Flemish painting, in particular the spec-
tacular assortment of Rembrandt, most notably his masterpiece Return of the Prodigal
Son .
Impressionism & Post-Impressionism
Another undeniable highlight of the Hermitage is the collection of French and Ger-
man paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries. This collection of impressionist and
postimpressionist paintings is arguably the best in the world, especially considering
recent additions: much of this artwork was displayed for the first time in the 1990s,
when the museum revealed some fabulous art hoards kept secret since seizure by the
Red Army from Germany at the end of WWII. It is now displayed under the title
'Hidden Treasures Revealed' and can be found on the 2nd floor of the Winter Palace.
The rooms on the 3rd floor, devoted to Monet, Cézanne, Renoir, Van Gogh and
Gaugin, are some of the museum's most impressive.
