THE HERMITAGE
The State Hermitage Museum, the geographic and tourism centrepiece of St
Petersburg, is one of the world's greatest art collections and usually most visit-
ors' first stop in the city, even if it is simply to admire the baroque Winter Palace
and the extraordinary ensemble of buildings that surround it. No other institu-
tion so embodies the opulence and extravagance of the Romanovs, and yet
today, for the price of admission, anybody can parade down the grand stair-
cases and across parquet floors, gawking at crystal chandeliers, gilded furniture
and an art collection that cannot fail to amaze.
