are several excellent ones on offer, as well as bike tours, boat tours and a
hop-on-hop-off bus that can take you around the main sights of the centre.
Walking Tours
Peter's Walking Tours ( 943 1229; www.peterswalk.com ) Established in
1996, Peter Kozyrev's innovative and passionately led tours are highly recom-
mended as a way to see the city with knowledgeable locals. The choice of
tours available is enormous. The daily Original Peterswalk is one of the fa-
vourites and functions as a do-it-yourself introduction to the city: you tell your
guide what aspects of the city you're interested in and they improvise a tour
for you then and there. Other tours include a Friday night pub crawl, a
Rasputin Walk and a WWII and the Siege of Leningrad tour. Tours depart from
Hostel Life ( CLICK HERE ), though it's a good idea to book your place before-
hand as these walks are justifiably popular.
VB Excursions ( 380 4596; www.vb-excursions.com ) Offers excellent
walking tours with clued-up students on themes including Dostoevsky and re-
volutionary St Petersburg. Their 'Back in the USSR' tour (R1150 per person)
includes a visit to a typical Soviet apartment for tea and bliny.
Anglo Tourismo ( 325 9906; www.anglotourismo.com ) This enthusiastic-
ally run company was offering free daily three-hour walking tours of the city
centre in the summer of 2011, no doubt to steer travellers to their excellent
boat tours. It's a great promotional idea though. Check on the website to see if
this is continuing.
Bike Tours
Petersburg Bike Tours ( 943 1229; www.biketour.spb.ru ) Run jointly by
Peter's Walking Tours ( CLICK HERE ) and Skat Prokat ( CLICK HERE ), these
excellent bike tours are a very popular way to cover large swathes of the city
in just a few hours. Most popular is the White Night Bike Tour (R1200 includ-
ing bike hire), which leaves from Skat Prokat at 10.30pm every Tuesday and
Thursday from mid-May until the end of August.
