with modern furnishings and great views from the higher rooms. Garish touches in-
clude some truly dreadful room art and a preponderance of plants throughout, but
these gripes aside, this is generally a smart and stylish modern hotel.

ART HOTEL TREZZINI €€
Vasileostrovskaya; )
Named after Domenico Trezzini, who developed the original
architectural plan for Vasilyevsky Island in the 18th century, this place styles itself an
'art' hotel, which means you can expect lots of garish paintings in the lobby. Thank-
fully the rooms are a little more restrained, although fake rose chandeliers may not be
to everyone's taste. Decor issues aside, Trezzini is well located, clean and good value.

SOKOS HOTEL PALACE BRIDGE €€€
Vasileostrovskaya; )
Far less a hotel and more a self-contained spa resort,
this huge complex is tucked away on a quiet side street just back from the Strelka. It
contains a vast pool, no less than eight saunas, several excellent restaurants and wine
bars, a bowling alley and a conference centre. Little surprise then that it's popular
with families and business people. In fact, it would be very easy not to leave the
premises for days on end - though that would rather take the point out of this great
location, just a 10-minute walk to the Hermitage.

SHELFORT HOTEL €€
Vasileostrovskaya; )
In a convenient but quiet location close to the metro, this
handsome building houses an excellent hotel on the first two floors of this residential
building. For those not fortunate enough to score the spacious suites, the regular
rooms are still pretty nice, sporting classically simple furnishings, high ceilings and
plenty of space. A scattering of antiques gives it a pleasant old-world air.
