14 spacious rooms after their favourite international cities. The themes are not la-
boured: a ceramic iguana clinging to the ceiling beam in the Barcelona suite; a tropic-
al feel to Bali; Moorish touches in Marrakesh. And yes, a room named St Petersburg,
with exposed brick walls and windows overlooking the canal. Lovely common areas
include a fireplace-warmed lounge and a vine-laden courtyard containing a guests-
only restaurant.

Energetic owners and Italophiles Andrey and Sasha extend
the warmest of welcomes to travellers who pass through St Petersburg. This is the
biggest of three apartments they rent out (by the room or in their entirety) - all are
centrally located and eclectically decorated with lots of designer touches and an eye
for beautiful furniture. Andrey and Sasha have chipped back plaster to the brick walls,
laid terracotta tile floors (with underfloor heating) and installed iron candelabras. The
bedrooms (two to four in each apartment) seem bigger than they actually are, thanks
to the use of enormous mirrors. Bathrooms are shared, as are kitchen facilities. Social-
ising is definitely encouraged, and your hosts will likely invite you to join them sip-
ping wine by the fire or drinking coffee on the rooftop.

On the banks of the Moyka River, hidden away inside a
quiet flower-filled courtyard, this bright yellow hotel provides a welcome respite from
the city's crowds. Warm hues, wood floors and natural lighting characterise the guest
rooms; though the on-site sauna and plunge pool are not free for guests, they do get a
20% discount. Aside from the owners' obvious fondness for plastic plants, this place
is a winner.
