Despite a renovation, the Academy of Science's
hotel has effortlessly retained its Soviet air. But with the Hermitage on the doorstep
and the bargain basement prices, who are we to complain? Advance booking is ad-
vised as the hotel can fill up with impecunious academics who, no doubt, feel very
much at home in its university-dorm-style rooms. Bathrooms are shared, though
there's a fridge and TV in each room. Nobody really speaks English but that's defin-
itely part of the fun.

Come and stay in St Petersburg's coolest art
given over to this super-friendly hostel. Some of the dorms here are enormous (one
has 20 beds in it!) but the facilities are spotless, and include washing machines and a
small kitchen. As well as the dorms there are three 'design rooms' that are boutique
hotel quality at budget price. Reserve ahead - these are nearly always booked up in
advance.
