Straddling the placid Volkhov River, Veliky Novgorod (usually shortened to plain
Novgorod) makes for a fascinating side trip from St Petersburg. It's one of Russia's
most attractive and tourist-friendly destinations and offers a great opportunity to see
life in a more normal city than highly atypical St Petersburg. Novgorod, which mis-
leadingly translates as 'new town', was actually founded in the 9th century. It's a tre-
mendously important centre of medieval Russian culture and by the 12th century had
become Russia's biggest and most powerful city, a legacy that lives on in its impress-
ive kremlin and numerous beautiful old churches and museums. Today it's a laid-
back, well-to-do kind of place with one foot in the present and one foot very much in
the past.
