In-Depth Information
The SS Peter and Paul Cathedral (adult/student R200/90; May-Sep) has an im-
pressive baroque interior, quite different from other Orthodox churches. It's today
famous as the last resting place for nearly the entire Romanov dynasty. Peter I's grave
is at the front on the right. Nicholas II and his family - minus Alexey and Maria -
were the latest and most controversial additions in 1998.
The 122.5m-high bell tower (adult/student R130/70; tours noon, 11.30pm, 1pm,
2.30pm & 4pm May-Sep) remains the city's tallest structure. It offers a small exhibition
about the renovation of the tower, as well as an up-close inspection of the bell-ringing
mechanism. The main reason to climb all these steps, of course, is for the magnificent
360-degree panorama views of the city. The bell tower is open only by guided tour,
which is only available in Russian and takes an hour. Tickets for the tour are sold at
the small boat house in front of the cathedral.
