PETER & PAUL FORTRESS
This large complex of defensive walls houses a former prison, museums and a
cathedral, and is the kernel from which St Petersburg grew into the world city it
is today. Anyone with any interest in the city's history or the Romanov dynasty,
should definitely make sure they don't miss the Peter and Paul Fortress.
On little Zayachy Island, where Peter the Great first broke ground for St Peters-
burg, construction of the Peter and Paul Fortress began in 1703. Having captured this
formerly Swedish settlement on the Neva, Peter set to turn the outpost into a modern
Western city. While the fortress was built as a defence against the Swedes, it has nev-
er been utilised in the city's defence - unless you count incarceration of political
'criminals' as national defence.
