Vasilyevsky Island offers plenty of choice for the discerning diner. There's a par-
ticular glut of places near the Strelka and around the metro station
Vasileostrovskaya.

RESTORAN €€
OFFLINE MAP
( Ресторанъ ; www.elbagroup.ru ; Tamozhenny per 2; mains R300-1200; Admiraltey-
skaya; ) Natural light filters in through large street-level windows, filling the spa-
cious hall, and cream-coloured linens and hardwood floors make for a chic, contem-
porary decor. It's an interesting contrast to the name of the restaurant (the old-fash-
ioned Russian spelling harks back to the days of Romanov splendour). The menu
manages to combine the best of haute russe cuisine with enough modern flare to keep
things interesting; try duck baked with apples or traditional Russian chicken pie with
pickled cep mushrooms.

OLD CUSTOMS HOUSE €€€

( Старая таможня ; Tamozhenny per 1; mains R950-1800; 1pm-1am; Admiraltey-skaya;
) This restaurant is not actually set in the old customs house, although it is
around the corner in the historic building that houses St Petersburg's first museum
(Kunstkamera). Famous for its wine list and excellent food, this restaurant is where
you will see St Petersburg's uppermost classes partaking of filet mignon and caviar
crepes.

STOLLE €

( www.stolle.ru ; 1-ya liniya 50; mains R100-200; 10am-10pm; Vasileostrovskaya;
) This cosy pie shop and cafe was the first in this chain. Aptly enough for a cafe
that sells Saxon-style pies, it's located in the heart of St Petersburg's old German
neighbourhood. For a full review, CLICK HERE .
