In-Depth Information
The
koryushka
is sometimes called the 'cucumber fish' for its distinctive smell
(which disappears after cooking). For a few short weeks, this delicious fish ap-
pears on restaurant menus and in private homes. The city even hosts an annual
koryushki
festival at the Peter and Paul Fortress. Across the city, cooks get
busy: breading this mild-flavoured fish with flour, salt and sunflower oil, frying it
up in a pan, and serving it with a slightly sweet tomato sauce or straight up. It's a
popular snack
k pivu
(with beer) or, of course, with vodka.
CAFE
AFE
SCHÜMLI €
(Kazanskaya ul 40; 9am-10pm; Sennaya Ploshchad)
With its large range of coffees,
sumptuous selection of cakes and - best of all - freshly made Belgian waffles, this
small but friendly cafe is a great place to regain flagging energy when wandering
around the city.
DRINKING & NIGHTLIFE
Sennaya
BAAR
STIRKA
This friendly joint has three washing machines, so you can drop off a load and have a
few beers while you wait for it to finish. A novel idea, though one few people seem to
take advantage of. Stirka is mainly a casual dive bar where people drop in for drinks
and the odd art show or live performance.
