St Petersburg is, quite simply, a city that is best appreciated from the water. Des-
pite Peter's efforts to make the population use boats as the main means of trans-
port, boat transport never quite caught on in the 'Venice of the North'. Even so, it's
well worth paying for a canal or river trip, offered all over the city day and night, so
that you can drift down the charming canals, see some offbeat architectural gems and
ride on the mighty Neva.
