In-Depth Information
7-11pm; Chernyshevskaya)
Very small and very New York, this cool club is the best
place in the city to hear modern, innovative jazz music, as well as blues, bluegrass
and various other styles (see the website for a list of what's on). The space is tiny, so
book a table if you want to sit down. Otherwise, you can always stand at the bar
(which is less expensive). The menu is limited to drinks and snacks.
CABARET
latest incarnation of a gay club that has been going in various forms for over a decade
is a great place for a campy, old-school experience, complete with a very popular drag
show featuring lip-synching trannies who come on stage at 2.30am each club night.
Lots of silly fun, but massively popular.

This
charmingly off-beat piano bar in a cellar on a quiet residential street just off Nevsky is
a great place to come for drinks, a full Russian menu and nightly concerts. The owner,
Boris Bardash, is a well-known musician with local band Ole Lukkoye and will often
take to the stage himself when local singer-songwriters aren't dropping in to do intim-
ate sets. The mosaic portrayals of various left-wing dictators appear not to be ironic.

RED FOX JAZZ CAFÉ
10am-2am Sun-Thu, until 5am Fri & Sat; Chernyshev-skaya)
The fun and friendly Red
Fox Jazz Cafe is a subterranean space that showcases jazz in the old-fashioned 1920s
to '50s sense: big band, bebop, ragtime and swing. Sunday changes it up with a jam
session, featuring anybody who wants to participate. The menu is extensive and af-
fordable and you can reserve a table for free.
