DRINKING & NIGHTLIFE
Liteyny & Smolny
BAAR
ZHOPA
(
Жопа
; Pr Bakunina 6; 8pm-1am Sun-Thu, until 8am Fri & Sat; Ploshchad Vosstaniya)
This funky, hip and largely unknown place is a hideaway for the cool kids. Its name
means 'arse' in Russian and is fairly rude, so don't ask old ladies for directions to get
here - the sign on the front door is just the first letter: Ж . Inside it's a treasure trove
of fairy lights, umbrellas hanging from the ceiling, tapestries on the walls and kitschy
chandeliers. Add in great music, table football and stiff drinks and you've got one of
Petersburg's coolest bars.

PROBKA
almost be in Rome when you enter this charming wine bar just off Liteyny pr. Tile
floors and terracotta walls recall an Italian
enoteca,
with its shelves stocked with wine
bottles and liqueurs. Several wines are available by the glass or half-bottle, and there
is a menu of light snacks, salads and pastas.
BAAR
P.I.E.R.O.G.I.
(nab reki Fontanki 40; 24hr; Gostiny Dvor; )
This long-established Moscow
chain of boho bookshop-cum-bars has now established itself in the northern capital
just moments from Nevsky. It's divided into smoking and nonsmoking rooms, enjoys
a very casual feel and is favoured by a young crowd. There's a full menu of interna-
tional dishes (R180 to R300) and regular live music.
