MATROSSKAYA TISHINA €€€
(
Матросская Тишина
; 764 4413; ul Marata 54; meals R500-1000; Ligovsky Prospekt;
)
This long-standing, high-quality seafood restaurant is one of the city's very best,
even though it doesn't look like much from the street. There's a large gourmet menu
including a sumptuous
Table Russe
(R4850 for two people) as well as a far more
wallet-friendly à la carte menu (try the sole
meuniére
with almonds and lemon or the
giant prawns flambéed in Talisker), and a great wine list. Reservations are a good
idea.
FRENCH
BISTRO GARÇON €€
Vosstaniya; )
This gorgeous little bistro is smart and unpretentious, with low light-
ing, upscale but still charming decor, and professional staff. Prices are reasonable giv-
en the excellent standard of the cooking (and Parisian chef). While this is the main
restaurant of the group in town, you can find its bakeries, which serve up excellent
sandwiches, all over St Petersburg.

CAT CAFÉ €€
(
Кафе Кэт
; Stremyannaya ul 22/3; mains R300-700; Mayakovskaya; )
With vines
hanging from the ceiling to evoke the Caucasian countryside, this popular and reliable
restaurant dishes up Georgian favourites such as hearty
khinkali
(meat dumplings),
decadent
khachapuri
(cheese bread) and delectable rolled aubergine with walnuts.
Sadly, it's not cheap (Georgian products are hard to come by due to a Russian trade
embargo since the 2008 war), but few people leave unimpressed.

IMBIR €€
(
Имбирь
; Zagorodny pr 15; mains R400-600; Dostoevskaya; )
Effortlessly
cool, Imbir combines ornate imperial elements with contemporary design to brilliant
effect. With a great atmosphere, it's always full. The hip local crowd come here for
dark coffee and creative cooking, all of which is reasonably priced. There's a full bar
too, and the place usually stays open until the small hours at the weekends.
