Istoriya represents a
very welcome new approach to food in St Petersburg. The friendly chef and owner
will talk you through the fish and seafood-dominated menu and tell you what's best
each day. With fresh oysters and lobster coming in twice a week, this upmarket yet
somewhat kitschy restaurant is definitely the best in town for seafood lovers, although
there is plenty of meat on the menu too.

A very welcome addition to the dearth of good
restaurants in this part of town is this charming place, which has an interesting menu
of Russian food with a modern slant. Unfortunately there are no English menus and
even those in Russian are hard to read as they're handwritten, so ordering can be
tricky. That said, it's well worth the effort - on a sunny day, the seats outside on the
terrace are hot property. Good breakfasts are served daily until noon, and until 2pm on
weekends (reservations are essential). There's also a child's playroom.

IL GRAPPOLO €€€
is a real treat, featuring traditional home-cooking with a gourmet slant (pizza with
black truffles, and cream of asparagus and prawn soup, for example) and a fantastic
accompanying wine list. The 2nd-floor dining room is bathed in natural light and is
one of the chicest venues in St Petersburg, with crisp linen tablecloths and views onto
the church across the street.
