This palatial shopping centre was created for the New Russian shopping
classes, who expect nothing less than grand and glittering. The biggest names in fash-
ion may have moved on to Bolshaya Konyushennaya ul, but the Grand Palace re-
mains home to Sonia Rykiel, Swarowski, Nina Ricci and local brand Wild Orchid, not
to mention the fanciest free toilets in the city.
PASSAGE
old-fashioned arcade, lined with boutiques and souvenir shops, runs between Nevsky
pr and Italiyanskaya ul. The shopping here is not particularly unique, but it is a pleas-
ant, atmospheric place to stroll, similar to Moscow's world-famous GUM.

This
shop, inside the Passage shopping centre, is well worth noting separately, as it con-
tains several small independent boutiques producing local accessories including bags,
jewellery, watches and cool clothing ranging from secondhand to hand-printed t-
shirts. Enter Passage through the door on the right, near the entrance to the underpass
and then go to the top floor of the building.

You'll have to ring the bell to gain admittance to this
oh-so-stylish boutique, but once you're in, it's inviting and friendly and the staff go to
great lengths to get you what you want. The showroom stocks Russian and interna-
tional designer gear at surprisingly reasonable prices.

Tucked away in the side of an arch just moments
from Nevsky is this little shop, which has lots of quirky old things for sale, from near-
antique Soviet records to charming bric-a-brac and ephemera from days gone by.
