( www.glinka-capella.ru , in Russian; nab reki Moyki 20; Admiralteyskaya) This his-
toric hall is beautifully located on the Moyka and was constructed for Russia's oldest
professional choir, the Emperor Court Choir Capella, founded in 1473. Originally
based in Moscow, it was transferred to St Petersburg upon the order of Peter the Great
in 1703. These days, performances focus on choral and organ music.
ST PETERSBURG'S DRINKING STREET - A QUICK GUIDE
If you are up for a night of bar-hopping, you can't do better than Dumskaya
ulitsa ( Dumskaya ul 9; noon-6am; Gostiny Dvor) , around which dozens of St
Petersburg's hottest spots for drinking and dancing are crammed into a crum-
bling, classical facade. A couple of these places are (or were) owned by Anton
Belyankin and Andrei Gradovich - two members of the local ska band Dva
Samolyota - which pretty much guarantees great music and a cool vibe.
While rumours continue that Dumskaya ul is slated as the city's next big
renovation project, at the moment it's all still here, so come at weekends to party
with a young, alternative and very up-for-it crowd. One tip: arrive early (before
11pm) to get a stamp from the bars, as they tend to fill up later and you may
have trouble getting in. Directly facing these bars in the shopping centre in the
middle of the street are three clubs, Ludovic, Shine and Punch - where all the
loud music is coming from. These are the favoured hangouts of a young teen
crowd who come to listen to brain-meltingly loud Russian pop.
