RUSSIAN MUSEUM
Even if your time in St Petersburg is limited, don't miss this world-class mu-
seum's overview of eight centuries of Russian art. It's easily done in a half-day
visit, unlike the vast and sometimes overwhelming Hermitage. While the Hermit-
age spreads its net across the cultures of the world, the Russian Museum - as
its name suggests - focuses solely on Russian art, from ancient church icons to
modern painting. The collection is magnificent and although it lacks some of the
better-known paintings that can be found in Moscow's Tretyakov State Gallery,
the Russian Museum's range is arguably more balanced.
