A. aquaticus continues to be the most abundant species within the upper MSC,
though the number of individuals recorded has generally decreased since the
commencement of oxygenation trials in 1998. This observation concurs with
general ecosystem dynamics as conditions improve (e.g., Hawkes & Davies
1971 ). The result is that a greater number of species are represented, and there
is a 'levelling out' in terms of relative abundance. As such, gradual changes in
the invertebrate community composition are well illustrated by examining the
shift in relative abundance of A. aquaticus and C. pseudogracilis ( Fig. 14.11 ). The
