Figure 8.1. Diatom record from Sinclair Flat on the lower River Murray. While undated, biostratigraphic correlation with other, dated
records suggest the lowermost sediments to be pre-settlement and those above 25 cm (Aulacoseira subborealis [
A. subarctica] rise) to be post
regulation. The pre-industralisation diatom flora is dominated by the epiphyte Cocconeis placentula and shallow, clear water taxa Eunotia
serpentina and Epithemia adnata. River plankters replace these and the nutrient and turbidity indicators Pseudostaurosira brevistriata, Staurosira
contruens forma venter and Nitzschia spp. come to dominate the upper sedimentary levels. The plankters Actinocyclus normanii and Cyclotella
meneghiniana increase from 12 cm marking increased salinity and/or nutrients concentration. The record shows remarkable parallels with
that from Lake Pepin (Engstrom et al. 2009 ) from the upper Mississippi River showing similar responses to industrialisation and regulation
in the respective catchments. CONISS is the programme within TILIA (Grimm 1993 ) that generates the dendrogram to guide placement
of zone boundaries.
