The reason is that they constitute an important carbohydrate and fat staple along-
side cassava and yams.
Fleshy leaves of a few herbaceous species, for example, Xanthosoma maffafa
( kontomere - local vernacular name), Fleuya aestuanes , Talinum triangulare
( bokoborkor ), and Corchorus olitorus , are kept in home gardens and have value
as vegetables for cooking.
