In-Depth Information
About one-third of New Zealand 's population lives in Auckland, which centers on
this slender isthmus. No surprise that one-third of all households have boats:
there's a harbor on the Tasman Sea, to the west, and another on the Pacific, to the
east. Looks idyllic, but this is the ring of fire. Evidence of the violent nature of New
Zealand's birth is all around: more than 50 extinct volcanoes and jagged piles of
rock of varying ages attest to tectonic activity—ongoing, since New Zealand sits on
top of two plates, which clank uneasily underneath the turquoise water.
