Rock paintings in
Australia
are among the oldest on the planet, with some con-
firmed to date back at least 28,000 years. Called Gwion Gwion figures, many mirror
the colors and shapes of the landscape so closely that they almost seem to have
been inspired by an aerial view of the Outback. Perhaps they were: Gwion Gwion
was, according to aboriginal cosmology, a long-beaked bird before he morphed into
a human artist.
