Further south, labyrinthine stream beds run like veins through rounded red dunes in
the Gibson Desert; hummocks of bluish and green grass soften the hills here. Further
east, in the Northern Territory , a spiny ridge pokes up, apparently the toughest,
most disrespectful remnant of the mountains that dominated Australia millions of
years ago, still daring the harsh climate to try to grind it down.
