In-Depth Information
The psychedelic lagoons and marshes of the western Sivash create an unnatural-
looking natural border between the Crimean peninsula, bottom, and Ukraine 's main-
land. Fed by the Sea of Azov, the Sivash is extremely shallow and packed with algae,
which makes it ideal for industrial salt extraction (and stinky in warm weather: locals
call it the “Rotten Sea”). Green algae thrive in less saline water but halobacteria flour-
ish as salinity increases, introducing pink and red tints. Dams hasten evaporation
while ensuring there's no coloring outside the lines.
