Mount Etna grumbles constantly but its regular showy blasts of ash do little more
than fertilize nearby vineyards and olive groves in Sicily, Italy . On the lush green
mainland, Mount Vesuvius, quiet since 1944, bears witness to the power of human
optimism: the three million people who live in the vicinity are clearly betting the vol-
cano that wiped out Pompeii won't erupt in their lifetimes (volcanologists are not so
sure).
