In-Depth Information
Several hundred million years ago a meteorite slammed into what is now Chad ,
creating the Aorounga crater, which is about 10 miles in diameter. Pockmarked by
erosion, Aorounga is decorated with stripes of raised rock that alternate with shal-
low, wind-cut valleys filled with blowing orange sand. Radar imaging from Space
Shuttle missions suggests that circular features stamped into the ground nearby
are related; Aorounga might be part of a crater chain formed when a large meteor-
ite blew apart on impact.
