In-Depth Information
Seasonal flooding turns the inland delta of the Niger River into a lake: Lac
Débo, in central Mali , a crossroads of geology and life. On the right there's
only hardpan: exposed bedrock hostile to vegetation. On the left, an invasion
of green, ushered in by the rivers and streams emptying into that giant,
swampy splotch of lake. Where there's water, life cannot be denied. I'm pretty
sure if we found a way to melt the ice on Mars, life would follow there, too.
