In-Depth Information
These hills in Defensores del Chaco National Park, Paraguay, have been whittled by
time and weather into this peculiar outcropping, about 25 miles in diameter. The sur-
rounding Chaco is a fairly dry alluvial plain, created by deposits of sediment left be-
hind by rivers, so this upwelling of hills is particularly unusual. It looks as though it
was created by some of the same tectonic forces that gave rise to the Andes, a little
farther west. There are brain-like formations all over the planet but this is one of my
favorites, because the colors of the vegetation make it look like something Dr.
Frankenstein dreamt up.
