It's surprising to look down and see what appears to be a seal drawn by Dr.
Seuss—especially when it's made out of something as transient as sea ice. This
seal seemed ready to swallow tiny St. Paul Island, just on the edge of the Gulf of
St. Lawrence, off Nova Scotia . But St. Paul, uninhabited and often fogbound, is
known as “the Graveyard of the Gulf”—and so it was for the ice seal, which split
apart on either side, as have many ships over the years.
