Lake Burnside looks like a classic one-cell organism, slowly boiling down to an in-
significant crust of salt in Western Australia 's Gibson Desert. But this saline glob-
ule is actually substantial, covering about 160 square miles in a desert that's a little
bigger than the state of Florida—which is to say, only the fifth largest desert on the
continent.
