Today, Broome is a popular beach town in
Western Australia
. In the late 19th cen-
tury, however, pearling was the major industry—a dangerous one. More than 900
of the Japanese divers who came to Broome died while trying to harvest oysters,
and are buried there; many others were lost at sea.
