Thailand's rainy season is well under way during this time, and tourist numbers are
correspondingly low. The most significant event of the season is a Buddhist holiday
ushering in the rains.
Asanha Bucha & Khao Phansa
Held on the full moon of the eighth lunar month (July or August), Asanha Bucha commem-
orates the Buddha's first post-enlightenment sermon. The following day, young men tradi-
tionally enter the monkhood and monks sequester themselves in a monastery for three
months (known as Khao Phansa).
