grid spacing. This procedure is implemented in the OSSFIM program, developed
by McBratney and Webster (
1981
). I used this program to compute the maximum
grid spacing for estimating the block-average of log(Pb) concentrations in the peat
soils near Mijdrecht. The 24 stratified random sampling locations of the reconnais-
sance survey (Fig.
4.2
), supplemented by 108 observations in the neighbourhood
with similar soils was used to estimate the variogram of log(Pb) (Fig.
4.6
). Note
that the log(Pb) concentrations show clear spatial structure. Figure
