distance, azimuth, elevation angle of a selected point on the map, and the elevation and dis-
tance of the horizon along a selected azimuth.
TPE opens to a map view, centered on your last location. To center on your current location,
tap the Center icon in the upper right corner. As with other location services, TPE location
uses Wi-Fi, the cellular network (on LTE models), and GPS to find your location. GPS is
by far the most accurate but since it depends on orbiting satellites it may not work inside
buildings or in narrow canyons where the view of the sky is limited or blocked. To select
another location, you can either search for it by name or drag the map pin.
You can select from standard (street view), satellite, hybrid, and terrain maps. Note that in
order to display maps, the phone or tablet has to have an Internet connection, either via
Wi-Fi or LTE. If you have a Wi-Fi-only tablet, plan on checking the map from an indoor
location before you head to the field. Since I also have an Android phone, I use my Wi-Fi
Nexus for planning outdoor photo shoots in advance from home or a place with Wi-Fi to
take advantage of the larger screen on the tablet, then use TPE on my phone in the field.
The usual Android gestures work on the TPE maps to pinch rotate, drag pan, and pinch
zoom in and out. You can also enable auto-compass mode so that the map will automatic-
ally orient itself to the direction you're facing.
If the time is displayed incorrectly or you get an error when searching for a location, do a
soft reset of the Nexus.
