In-Depth Information
This feature also works well with tablet covers which automatically turn the tablet off when
the cover is closed, and on when they are opened.
Owner Info
It's a good idea to enter your name and contact information, such as your cell phone num-
ber, into Owner Info. This information is shown on the lock screen and increases the chance
that a lost device will be returned.
Encrypt Tablet
For the ultimate security, you can use this option to encrypt the contents of the device. To
use encryption, you must set a PIN or password. Encryption is irreversible- the only way to
remove it is to do a factory reset, which erases all personal data and removes all installed
apps. Most users won't need this level of security unless their organization requires it.
To encrypt your device, set a PIN or password, charge it fully and leave it plugged into
the charger. Then go to Settings, Personal, Security, Encrypt Tablet. You can't encrypt your
tablet unless it is plugged into the charger. Encryption takes an hour or more, and if the
device loses power during the process, some of your data could be lost.
Make Passwords Visible
Since typing passwords on a screen keyboard can take some getting used to, you have the
option of making passwords visible as you type them. Once you get used to the screen key-
board, uncheck this option for the best security.
Device Administrators
This setting allows you to control which apps can act as device administrators. Use this
carefully as it gives apps full control over unlocking passwords and allows apps to perform
a factory reset and erase all your data and apps.
Android Device Manager
This is a built in app. By default, it can be used to locate your device if it is lost or stolen.
To use this feature, location access must be turned on under Settings, Personal, Location
Access. The location will be more accurate if GPS Satellites are turned on.
