The open Apps Drawer, with app icons sorted alphabetically. To see the rest of your apps,
swipe left. Widgets are shown after apps
Notification Area
The Notification area at the left top edge of the screen is where small icons appear to notify
you of app updates, email, calendar events, and other notifications. Swipe down from the
top of the screen to view details of each notification. Tap a notification to open its app. For
example, tapping on an email notification opens your Gmail or email app. Once you open
a notification, the notification icon disappears from the Notifications area. You can tap the
icon at the end of the list to dismiss all of the notifications. Or tap anywhere else to hide
the list without dismissing the notification icons.
Status Area
The Status area at the upper right corner shows priority notification, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and
battery status, as well as the time. Swipe down from the top of the screen with two fingers
(or twice with one finger) to open the Quick Settings panel, and tap anywhere else to hide
it. From Quick Settings, you can adjust screen brightness, turn Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Air-
plane Mode on or off, lock the screen orientation, and toggle location services. There may
be more options, depending on your device.
Making Phone Calls
If you have an Android phone, the left-most icon in the Favorites Tray is usually a Phone
icon. Tap it to bring up a dialer keypad. The pre-installed Phone app also lets you get a
list of recent outgoing and incoming calls, as well as a list of favorites you've set in the
Contacts app.
Texting
A Messaging icon on the Favorites Tray lets you send and receive text messages. Often, an
easier way to make phone calls or text is from the Contacts app. See the chapter Managing
Contacts .
