1yWbCoW ) offers the most protection. As with tablet cases, the Otterbox includes screen
protection. If you carry your phone on your belt or if you work outdoors, an Otterbox is
a good choice. The Otterbox Commuter series ( http://bit.ly/1zGOXQi ) are less bulky and
don't include a belt clip- but still have screen protection.
Screen Protectors
If your tablet or phone case doesn't include a screen protector, you can buy one separately.
For the Nexus 7 and my phones, I've used the protectors from JETech ( http://bit.ly/
1z4tLUJ ) . While most phones and tablets use very tough screens, they can still get
scratched, especially if you carry your device in a purse or pocket. Tests have also shown
that screen protectors add some protection against broken screens if the phone is dropped.
Some people find that screen protectors actually make touch screens easier to use by mak-
ing them less slippery and reducing glare. Others find that they reduce contrast.
To avoid annoying air bubbles and bumps in the screen protector, follow the manufacturer's
directions exactly when installing a protector. The process is tedious but an installed pro-
tector lasts a long time.
Headphones
While many Android phones and tablets have decent speakers for such a small device,
you'll probably want headphones if you listen to a lot of music, play games, watch movies
and TV shows, or use Skype. Good quality headphones also produce better sound than
small speakers. Of course, you should use headphones in places such as libraries, airliners,
and other public places to avoid disturbing others.
There are three basic types of headsets- in the ear “earbud” style, on the ear, and over the
ear. Any of these types can be wired or wireless using Bluetooth. You can also buy headsets
with active noise cancellation.
Wired Earbuds
Wired earbuds are the lightest and most compact headphones, and good ones produce sur-
prisingly good sound. They also use the least power. Low end earbuds such as JLab Jbuds
( http://amzn.to/19e7pge ) are just a few dollars. High end earbuds such as the Sennheiser
CX 300B MK II ( http://amzn.to/1cfSmG0 ) are more expensive but produce better sound.
