routes directly. There are also many GPS based apps for specialized activities, such as pho-
tography (see the section Photographer's Aids ) and geocaching.
GPS Essentials
GPS Essentials ( http://bit.ly/1iPb3mg ) turns your device into a full-function GPS receiver.
There are over a dozen main screens, many of which have a customizable dashboard area
where you can place GPS values chosen from a long list.
The main screens include a full-screen dashboard and a geo-referenced camera app that re-
cords your GPS position and has a HUD (heads-up display) which shows azimuth, tilt, and
a horizon line. A compass page shows your heading and the bearing to your destination, if
one has been set.
You can choose from a number of maps to display, including MapQuest and Google Maps.
You can display, create, and edit waypoints, routes, and tracks. You can also share GPS
data with others. A satellite status page shows which GPS satellites are in your sky and
which are being used to compute your location. You can also view the geo-referenced pho-
tos you've taken with GPS Essentials.
The app supports most map datums and coordinate systems which means it can be used
anywhere in the world. In addition, GPS data can be imported and exported in KML and
GPX format so you can work with GPS data in Google Earth, other mapping programs and
apps, and with most dedicated handheld GPS receivers.
