Google Maps App
The full screen Google map that you used in the example above can be opened directly
via the Google Maps app, which is pre-installed on Android. No matter how you open it,
Google Maps has many of the features of the web-based desktop version.
You can center the map on your location by tapping the Center icon at the lower right
corner of the map. In order to do this, Location Services must be on, as described above.
You can swipe to move the map, pinch-zoom in and out, and rotate the map with two fin-
gers.
You can search for places by tapping the search bar at the top of the screen. You can search
for categories such as restaurants, hotels, gas stations, or airports, search for the name of
a business, a geographic name, or a street address. When you tap the search bar, a list of
recent searches pops up, as well as your search history. To see more of this list, tap the Hide
Keyboard icon left of the Home icon at the bottom of the screen.
By tapping the Menu icon at the upper left corner, you can show traffic, public transit, bi-
cycling routes, satellite view, and open the Google Earth app.
MapQuest
An alternative to Google Maps, MapQuest ( http://bit.ly/16HkcLq ) was the first web-based
map service. You can search by typing in a search term or by speaking. Icons along the bot-
tom of the screen let you show points of interest (POI) on the map, including hotels, food,
gas, airports, shopping centers, coffee shops, parking, grocery stores, schools, hospitals,
and movie theaters. Icons on the map show the location of the POI you've enabled. If there
are no matching POI on the map, a box pops up. Zoom the map out by pinch-zooming.
MapQuest also shows traffic and has a satellite view. The street map can be shown in day
and night modes. Night mode is easier to see in a dim vehicle at night. You also manually
edit your route and set roads to be avoided, including highways, toll roads, ferries, unpaved
roads, seasonally closed roads, and direct routes. You can also have MapQuest calculate
the shortest or fastest route, and also walking routes.
