PLAZA DE MAYO
AND MICROCENTRO
There has been a
plaza mayor
(town square)
at this site since the city's second founding in
1580. During the early years of the Spanish
conquest, it would have been both the main
marketplace and the political and legislative
center. Even now, the Presidential Palace,
national bank, and economic ministry line
the plaza. When the city established itself as
a maritime hub after Independence in 1816,
Microcentro became the chief banking and
trading district. The narrow crowded streets
hark back to the days of Spanish colonization.
